In your Home, Be the Main Character

So often, we feel unseen, generic, directionless, or confused about who we are and what we want. This can be seen and expressed in our homes - but it can also be (somewhat) remedied there.

Designing Stories

I am a reader; I read about 100 books a year. I don’t adhere to any genre. I flip from historical fiction to biographies, from literary classics to fantasy, from children’s books to best sellers. I love the way it makes me see things from different perspectives; I love the way language captures experiences; and I love stories.

It surprised me to discover that my love of stories translated into the way I approach interior design. So many people live interesting lives, and have grand dreams, but never get to express them. I think this is why current trends are rejecting generic, white and neutral, soulless spaces; we want our spaces to capture not just a personality, but our personality. I think of designing a room as an opportunity to tell the story of the people that lives there. And, perhaps more importantly, to set the stage for the chapters still to come.

As I set to embark on my own next chapter - launching Christina Anderson Designs - I am beset with questions on what I actually want to say, be it in a post, or in my interior design projects. And this is what I have identified. I want to design (and inspire) spaces that tell the stories of people’s lives, and inspire them to write new chapters; spaces that make them feel like a main character. So often, we feel unseen, generic, directionless, and confused about who we are and what we want. This can be seen and expressed in our homes - but a piece of it can also be (somewhat) remedied there.

Next Chapter

Over the next several blog posts, I will be breaking down my process, step-by-step. This will be useful for potential Clients, to understand exactly how I work, and for those that want to try things themselves. Here is what is ahead:

- The questions I ask, before even looking for inspiration, so that the results will feel authentic and thoughtful.

- How I translate these words into images, to make unique moodboards that are provocative and inspiring.

- How I then translate those abstract images into concrete selections for a project.

- How I edit and revise the details of this ‘draft’ so that the design works seamlessly.

- Special touches to make the final installation even better than you dreamed.

I will also answer common questions, especially the ones that people are scared to ask. Some topics you can expect include:

- How do I choose an Interior Designer?

- How much does hiring an Interior Designer cost?

- What does my project budget need to be?

- What does and Interior Designer do?

I hope you will follow along, and I welcome all of your kind and critically kind commentary!
